BRONZE – Royal Easter Show Awards 2010
With the undisputed success of Pinot Noir in Central Otago, there is no doubt that Pinot Gris will achieve a similar result in the final analysis as long as yields are kept low and winemaker input is sensitively applied. The Archangel wine is already there, a benchmark for others to aim at. Bright and limpid straw yellow in colour, the aromatics strike a remarkable balance between intrigue and decadence. Honey, spices and yellow stonefruits sit at the core with nuances of pears, tropical fruits, and steel support the nose. The bouquet is sheer delight. Softly full, with 13.7% alc, the 7.7 g/l residual sugar lies at the heart of a fine, concentrated palate. The wine is fresh with excellent acidity, yet it is extremely harmonious and accessible now. This Pinot Gris has richness, yet an elegance, cut and style. Drink over the next 3-4 years, but it is hard to resist now. 200 cases made.

The 2009 Archangel Pinot Gris displays delicate varietal pear aromas and flavours, a touch of honeysuckle and a nicely structured palate with a touch of mineral grip on the finish.
